Early Years
Born into a wealthy Dutch family, the Vandenbergs, Alex was trained from youth to be a negotiator,
skeptic and hard nosed businessman. He made his parents proud with his competitive spirit and knack for figuring people out at a glace. He quickly ascended to lead the Vandenberg business as CEO of the largest trading company in Europe. He also got heavily involved in European politics. He was known as a civic leader, politician and a man of impeccable character.
Alex met John Thornton when
John dated Alex's sister, Jillian Vandenberg, in college. Big brother Alex came to check
John out. They became fast friends and remained close even after
John broke it off with Jillian. When
John approached Alex with the idea of a company that would buy other companies to divert funds to heal people and build up the infrastructure in third world countries he couldn't wait to join.
The only issue for Alex was how joining with
John's new company would affect his relationship with the love of his life, Valentina (Valen) Fournier.

Alex was the most perceptive of the Free Souls and a great organizer. On the one hand he didn't have much inner structure but he had a high degree of purity and integrity. This
imbalance caused him to be a bit of a rebel. He had an unusual ability to deal with great deal of chaos. This positioned him well to expand on Will's plan to dominate the stock market. He developed a system he called "Hurricane Economics" where he used thousands of front companies to move stock around from one market to another without being
recognized. He used this ability to gain control of many major companies and use their resources to build key infrastructure in underdeveloped countries. As perceptive as he was he had a blind spot for Valen because of his overpowering love for her. It would end up clouding his
judgment and allowing her, without soul powers, to deceive the most perceptive and insightful of the Free Souls.
