Early Years
Ben Thornton, John's dad, died in Vietnam
leaving his mom Laurie to raise him. During that difficult
time of his life John suffered an even greater trauma when his uncle
molested him. This caused John to be very insecure and hide
his true feelings. It also motivated him to be the best he
could be. He was a High School Valedictorian, got a
scholarship to USC, graduated top of his class and excelled in post
graduate work as an Anesthesiologist. In his spare time he
became an accomplished surfer and exhibited a strong creative side
as a poet, rock guitar player and pop philosopher.
John met and befriended
Adam Solomon and
Will Thibodaux
at Vanderbilt before he took a position with the research
company that was funding Adam's research. John thought Adam
was the smartest person he ever met and became a loyal friend.
When Adam got in trouble he, along with Will, pledged to help unlock
the mystery of the strange DNA sequence Adam discovered.

Adam and
Will had to heal John of his deep
emotional wounds before they gave him the operation. When
John, the smallest of the three, got his mind, body and soul
connected he immediate realized his tremendous strength. Both
physically and with his ability to move things mentally he was far
the superior of the other doctors. He would only meet his
match when Sergei came along. Still, being much smarter than
Sergei, he was the most formidable of the Free souls.
When he saw
Valen he fell in love with her and
probed her mind (something Alex refused to do.) From that
point on he had an ability to get into
Valen's mind like no-one
else, even Will, could.
John would eventually learn to combine his
kinesthetic ability with laser light to produce a red blast from his
forehead that packed a huge punch. John also devised a rocket
powered surf board that could travel at mach one and go into subspace.
